Your First Session

When you turn up for your first session, it is advisable to arrive in plenty of time before the session starts.
This will ensure you have enough time to find the venue, meet the instructor, ask any questions you may have
and get changed if necessary. There is also an insurance form which must be completed before you commence training.

For your first session, you can wear a gi (white martial arts uniform) if you have one, but most people
just wear loose clothing for the first few weeks. Tracksuit trousers and a t-shirt is probably best. There are
male and female changing rooms available.

All training is conducted bare-foot and shoes are not allowed on the training mat.
You must also empty your pockets, turn your phone onto silent, and remove any jewellery and watches that you
may be wearing. long hair must also be tied back. You will be able to bring your bag into the training room,
and leave it to the side of the mat.

The session will begin with a warm-up, conducted by the instructor or one of the senior grades. After warming up,
there will then be a short formal greeting to 'officially' start the session.

For the rest of the session, you will
be shown a number of different techniques, one at a time, and will pair up with another student to practice the
techniques, while the instructor comes round to work with each pair individually.
Sometimes the whole group will be doing the same technique and sometimes students are split up by grade
to work on techniques appropriate for their ability.

At the end of the session, there will be a cool-down, and finally the formal greeting is repeated to end the session.

Once the session is concluded, everyone gets changed, pays for the session
(remember that your first session is Free), and goes to the pub!
